Response to For Whom I am Writing?

quillI received a response from the author to my comment on her post on the blog – she was polite but the gist of her reply was that I was wrong and perhaps a little naive, a small quote:

but the truth is this: a story will appeals to a niche segment of the population more than the whole. It’s knowing who the reader of our stories is that will help an author reach out

Perhaps I am naive but I still stick with my opinion. I’m not prepared to alter the way I write to try and fit some perceived notion of who might, or might not, read my work. I write from the heart and that, to me, is the best way to write.

I agree. It concerns me when people try to shoe horn everything to narrow standards. If every book is aimed the same way the audience will be so narrow the appeal will be limited.Even if this author is published, that does not make her an expert who should “guide” others since there is so much diversity in the interests of the reading public.

I quite agree, Joe. As someone stated on Facebook, writing is an art and if the great artists had only painted what the market had demanded rather than what their senses told them, then we would never have true art. Write from the heart not the slide rule.

Your blog is impressive. I also write from my heart. May good fortune guide your path… J. A. Ireland Sesla’s Enchanted Tales

Thanks, J.A. for your comment – and good wishes which I send back with a smile:)
