The dreaded blurb

quillBeen talking over the draft blurb for THE EYNAN with my publisher. Not sure the one I submitted a while ago is the way to go. I think the one I composed for QUESTOR was ‘overwritten’ in that perhaps I provided too much of the plot. My publisher is quite happy to look at a new version and see which one he thinks works best. I hate writing blurbs and synopsis, I find they are more work than the flipping books! But, seeing as how cover art and blurbs are a writer’s shop window…

Blurbs are a tragedy to me. I wish you luck writing yours. You’ll get there!

I think most authors have trouble with the blurb. Thanks for your kind wishes:)

Yowza! The timing of this post is terrific. I am headed to a meeting with authors in Mid Michigan this weekend and this is the topic of our discussion: blurbs, taglines and “elevator pitches”, the one minute synopsis for the chance meeting with a publisher/agent. Couldn’t be better timed. Thanks!

I always thought the reason you got a publisher was to avoid writing your own blurb!

Afraid not! You have to write both the synopsis and the blurb and the publisher edits as necessary. After all, it is your story so who would know it better?
