I’ve been struggling recently to get any writing done. Admittedly part of the problem is my life outside of writing which still goes on apace with all the inherent commitments of family and home, but it doesn’t help that when I do find some time to myself and sit in front of my laptop I find it very difficult to actually write anything!
I pulled back a little and looked again at the scene I was working on; reading through it very carefully and I finally saw the problem. It wasn’t working because the framework of the plot was too weak, missing some major points to draw the pieces together with clarity. So I have to go back to basics and build a stronger back story. I’ve been making notes today, plot points that need adding or clarifying to strengthen the world building. Tomorrow I’m going to read through the first few chapters very carefully and edit or re-write as necessary.
In one way it’s frustrating to have to do this, but in another it’s best to get it sorted now because otherwise there would be a lot more work involved at a later stage in the novel. I can say I feel better now I know what the problem is and, given time, I can fix it.
Right now I need to take a break and come to it fresh tomorrow – or maybe the day after as I’ve just remembered I have the plumber coming in the morning…
